Zawiercie is a junction station where the central railway line ends and connects to it after turning off the "Wiedenka" in Grodzisk. However, this station is of much greater importance - a second pair of tracks starts here, allowing freight trains to run more freely. The latter runs via Łazy to Ząbkowice; at these stations other important railway lines for Silesia and Zagłębie branch off. In Zawiercie itself there is a single-track line leading to Siewierz, on which passenger services were suspended in the 1970s. Plans are currently underway to electrify and modernise the line to enable the construction of a railway line to Pyrzowice Airport. There is also a double-track branch line in the direction of Siewierz, which allows trains to enter the station from the direction of Łazy without having to change direction in Zawiercie.
The station's location at the end of what is currently the fastest railway line makes it subject to the changes taking place during the modernisation of CMK. In 2009, the switches were rebuilt to allow access to this line at speeds of up to 100 km/h. At that time, new switches 20 and 21 were built and the level crossing, consisting of switches 61 and 63, was rebuilt. The signalling equipment was also modified to display the appropriate signals. Other changes included the installation of an ETCS package which allowed the transmission of signal indication information to the vehicle. These packages were installed at the exit signals in the direction of Gora Włodowska. In the following years, the pilot implementation of ERTMS/ETCS has been modified - currently the activation of ERTMS/ETCS is underway behind the station in the direction of Góra Włodowska.[1]

Tracks in the station
The station currently has a passenger section located in its northern part. It consists of 4 passenger tracks with 3 platforms. A single-track platform next to the station building and a double-track platform enable traffic on the main lines towards Myszków and Psary. The last platform (No. 4) used to serve trains towards Siewierz. On both sides of the island platform there are sidings which facilitate the termination of regional trains.
Behind the group of passenger tracks in the direction of Łaz there are several sidings and behind them a group of 11 freight tracks. Exit from it towards Łazy is possible only on freight track No 4. The same applies to the branch to Siewierz, which starts on track No 3.[1]
