It's created by adding second motor unit to basic EN57, doubling it's power and adding another 52 seats for total of 264. EN71 can be coupled with other EN71 or with EN57 for multiple units operation.
First bunch were produced at the Pafawag factory in Wrocław between 1965-1966 with second decade later between 1974-1975, both for Yugoslavian market. In 1976 20 units were produced for domestic market for route Kraków-Zakopane where EN57 would underperform on high elevation gradients. In later years many were created by combining sections of damaged EN57 and some were taken back from former Yugoslavian countires.

EN57/71 EMU in reality

EN57' (type 5B+6B+5B, 5Bk+6Bk+5Bk, 5BT+6BT+5BT, 5Bm+6Bm+5Bm, 5Bu+6Bu+5Bu and 5Bg+6Bg+5Bg) - a normal gauge three-car low-platform electric multiple unit, produced at Pafawag's plant in Wroclaw in 1962-1993. It is the longest produced rolling stock EMU in the world - 1429 units were made. The prototype of the EN57 series was the high-performance unit EW55.

Based on the EN57 series, Pafawag has also designed four-car units with an additional engine section - EN71, four-car versions for long-distance transport (ED72 and ED73) and vehicles for suburban transport (EW58) and EW60 for the Tri-City Rapid Transit (oryg. SKM Trójmiasto). Both ever made EW60 EMU's were sold after the end of their operation by PKP SKM and handed over to Koleje Mazowieckie, which subjected them to major repairs and modernisation. During the production process, structural changes were made, mainly concerning the braking and running gear elements of the vehicle. Units from 1900 onwards had a modified shape of the front wall and new equipment for the driver's cab, based on the EW58 series.

Over the years of operation, the EN57 series units have undergone various upgrades by different owners. Some of these have been limited to the external appearance of the units, while others have included changes to the driveline design and modifications to meet the needs of disabled passengers.

Since the 1980s, railway enthusiasts and railwaymen have referred to EN57 series locomotives as "kibel". [1]

EN71 is a standard-gauge 4-car electric multiple unit, designed for regional passenger transport on mountainous routes. It's created by adding second motor unit to basic EN57, doubling it's power and adding another 52 seats for total of 264. EN71 can be coupled with other EN71 or with EN57 for multiple units operation.
